Yankees: Controversial Ad Featuring Santa in Plane
A holiday ornament featuring a plane-flying Santa Claus, which is part of an advertisement for a New York Yankees, is currently at the center of a controversy after the plane crash of one of the Yankees player.
The ornament had been set up several days before Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle died in a plane crash. But now it appeared to be in particular bad timing and has shocked many Yankees tickets holders.
The ad shows on the ornament a smiling Yankees Santa Claus flying in a plane. It says "The 2006 Annual Yankees Ornament makes the ideal gift for every New York fan on your Christmas list". It adds "Your team spirit will soar" with the plane on your tree. Most people who have seen the advertisements were shocked but most realized that it was just bad timing and an unintentional mistake. Most people are now figuring out why the ornament has not been removed since the terrible accident.
The same ornament also appeared as a circular advertisement in Sunday, Oct. 8th editions of Newsday only three days before the Oct. 11th crash on the Upper East Side of Manhattan that killed Lidle and his flight instructor.
The Danbury Mint is in charge of the collectable and of his sale. Ruth Wolf, co-owner of a gift and collectibles store in Merrick explained that the mint had planned to produce and sell the ornament well in advance starting from the beginning of this month. He justified the strategy of the association by explaining that it was critical to prepare and sponsor the ad within a certain time frame, otherwise they could lose several weeks of sales.
MLB gave his reaction about the ornament and a league spokesman called it an unfortunate case of bad timing. But they did not give any obligation to remove the ornament or to stop its sales leaving this decision to the Danbury Mint
