The race for the playoffs is heating up in the American League, and the Minnesota Twins are smack dab in the middle of it. The good thing for the Twins is that they have Johan Santana on their side. He is one of the best pitchers in the entire league, and is a definite front runner for the honor of the American League Cy Young award. If the Twins are going to make the playoffs, Santana will have to come up with a few more clutch wins down the stretch.

Through this point in the season Santana has compiled a record of 15-5. Santana has managed to get this stellar record by leading the American League in ERA at 3.01. When Santana is on the mound he only needs a few runs from his team in order to come out on top. He is also the league leader when it comes to strikeouts with 196 total. This is compared to only 39 walks; talk about being able to control your pitches game in and game out.

Santana is definitely one of the best pitchers in the league, and at the age of 27 he has plenty more left. And the Twins are hoping that he can continue his dominance throughout the rest of 2006. They are hot on the trail of a playoff spot, but will have to win consistently down the stretch. It is safe to say that when Santana is on the mound the Twins have a great chance of winning.

That freeing up the salary from Luis Castillo was the only way we could clear enough bucks to hope to hold onto Torii Hunter, and in the future Johann Santana and possibly Jo...
